Let’s Talk About…Sex? EEW.
So it’s Monday, and some of you are still recovering from what everyone’s favorite media blog, Gawker, has called “The Tet Offensive of Hangovers”, so here’s a quick minute.
I once toured Juniata College, a charming little liberal arts college in Central Pennsylvania. Knowing back then that I wanted to be a journalist (or at least work at the school paper), I decided to pick up a copy of the “Juniatan” and leaf through it on the three-hour car ride home. And, nessled somewhere in the back of its weekly layout, was a Sex Column. Okay, I said, lots of colleges have these, and read it. It was, sadly, terrible.
The problem with sex columns these days is that they pretty much serve one purpose: school newspapers print them so that they can point to them in an argument and shout, “We’re progressive! We’re hip! We’re with it!” But if your sex column is tip-toeing around taboos just for the sake of “going there,” you’re not going anywhere.
Enter Boston University. We’re the first college in the nation to shoot our own art-nude magazine (which the university wanted NOTHING to do with, granted), and the student body is stuffed to the gills with a) liberals and b) rabbits. So you’d think that the school’s newspaper, the illustrious Daily Free Press, would be happy to indulge a budding sex columnist in order to further themselves.
Haha…no. The zombies at 648 Beacon Street were only too happy to show that girl, Jackie Reiss (a former FreeP editor and dear friend of mine), the door. But someone else thought it was a good idea- the Editor-in-Chief of a new online magazine at Boston U, the bu quad. “The Hookup” was born, and the bu quad is now celebrating its third issue.
What does this have to do with The little victories, though? Well first, it’s good to find a magazine startup at BU that isn’t predominantly staffed with people who thought Miranda Priestly from “The Devil Wears Prada” was a good role-model, and second, The Little Victories is in it. No, not just “the quad”…I’m in “The Hookup.”
Now, it’s not graphic (please, people: everyone knows that the cardinal rule of sex columns is that the writers probably aren’t getting any), but you’re more than welcome to read Jackie’s (and my) take on LGBT dating by clicking here. Enjoy…
TLV returns to its regular schedule tomorrow with (Not) New Music Tuesday.
